After 20+ years of training personal hunting and companion dogs, we have became fully invested in working on the perfect versatile hunting companion that fits many of today’s generation of hunters. Here in North eastern NC, the wild bobwhite population isn’t as plentiful as it once was but there still is birds to be found if the work is put in. I personally did not do much bird hunting in my youth because I was always told “there isn’t any birds like there once was”. Much of my hunting consisted of deer, squirrel, rabbit dove, duck etc. I’ve always had a dog that would track or retrieve and or both. That’s what led me to look into the “versatile dog breeds”. After many conversations and research, I quickly realized the GSP was my next breed of choice. With advice of local bird dog trainers I broke my first bird dog.  But that wasn’t enough and the addiction grew. We once were going to local preserves for bird exposures for young dogs but that wasn’t enough and I began spending hours every weekend and many pairs of boots but we consistently started find wild quail to the extent I started loosing the interest to shoot and rather just watch the dogs work. We now own 7 acres of managed bobwhite habitat that has produced a wild bobwhite safe haven to many quail before brooding day old quail chicks to be released at maturity with very minimal human interaction. It’s proving to make our dogs hunt with their natural instincts rather than being forced to. Our dogs are all hunted over wild quail, woodcock and dove regularly. They are also used for tracking when needed. We’re striving to produce a great quality hunter and even better hunting companion for tomorrows hunters. Whether it’s hunting one game or many, a GSP is irreplaceable hunting companion. Please call/text Mike at 252-3one2-343two for more information.

🐶 Buyer’s Checklist for Gun Dogs

Whether you’re buying, selling, or studding a dog, it’s essential to take the right steps to protect yourself—and the animals involved.

  • Always meet the dog in person at the breeder’s home or kennel—never agree to buy without seeing them first.
  • Ask to see the puppies with their Dam (mother), and the Sire (father) if available.
  • Verify all paperwork:
    • Kennel Club (KC) registration number
    • Date of birth
    • Health screening results
  • Prepare questions to ask the breeder. Some helpful ones include:
    • Did you breed the dog(s) yourself?
    • Can I see where they were bred and raised?
    • How old is the Dam, and how many litters has she had?
    • Was the birth natural or via C-section?
    • Are there any known health issues?
    • Can I see documentation for both Dam and Sire?
    • Will the puppy be vaccinated and wormed before purchase?
  • If something feels off, walk away. Don’t ignore red flags.
  • Ask for advice from a trusted third party if you’re unsure.
  • Take your time. This is a big decision—don’t rush it.
  • Puppies should appear happy, healthy, clean, and curious.
  • You should be allowed to see and handle all puppies in the litter, not just the one you're considering.
  • Never buy a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.
  • Avoid any puppies that show signs of illness—e.g. runny eyes, weakness, or diarrhoea.
  • Is the whelping pen clean?
  • Do the dogs have access to fresh water, clean food, and adequate space?
  • The living conditions can say a lot about the breeder’s standards.
  • Ensure you receive the KC registration form and all relevant documents at the time of payment.
  • Write up a simple contract to protect both buyer and seller—especially important in case circumstances change.
  • Never agree to buy a puppy in a car park or public place. Always go to the breeder's premises.

🧠 Final Thought

Buying a gun dog is your responsibility. Do your homework on both the breed and the breeder. Make sure your decision is informed, confident, and in the best interest of the dog.
